Picker vs camera icon in Auto Tune Levels option for AgX

Apologies if this ‘stupid’ question has been asked and answered previously but I didn’t find the answer I was looking for in the manual or the discussion forum. I did find useful information in the manual though which goes part way towards answering my question.

My question is about the two options of the picker versus the camera icon for initiating auto tune levels in AgX. I have always used the picker and always been happy with the resulting black and white points that are set. I am wondering when the camera icon becomes the best choice to select. I have read the manual and understand that the camera icon estimates the black and white relative exposure based on the settings of the exposure module. But when is this an advantage. That is something I am struggling to understand or experience with my experiments.

Yes, that’s what it does. I also don’t understand why, but some prefer it over the picker.

So it sounds like you have been kind enough to give us the option but you would recommend the pickers yourself? :slightly_smiling_face:

This is how I have read @kofa previous posts on this. Paraphrased, the camera icon process does not look at the image, just the exposure module settings. From that, I infer that the picker tool is doing something much more inteligent with the whole image (or the selected part of it) and I have never bothered with the camera icon.

I also had this thought: “By the time this image reaches AgX, it has potentially gone through tonal changes in Tone Equaliser and/or Colour Balance RGB. which render the original exposure setting meaningless.”

Not intelligent, no: it just uses the min and max returned by darktable.

Istvan, you have referred to this before, and I then understood there to be some global variables that is available to all modules in the pixelpipe.
Can you, or somebody else, explain where these variables derive from? Is this f. ex. something the raw black/white point module establish?

No, they come from the picker, from the area selected, with values that serve as the module’s input.

So I misunderstood - it’s only within AgX “the module”?
EDIT: - or was it perhaps previously referred to the picker function being a global function in the program system?

Can you rephrase that? I don’t understand the question.

(I think I just must have misunderstood completely in something you wrote in a previous post in another thread that I’m not able to retrieve. (I’m currently trying to catch in on a 2 week backlog on the forum …) I now think that you likely were then referring to the picker function as something that was available for all modules (programmingwise). Whatever, we can just leave it there, as you have anyhow clarified that my initial assumption/understanding was incorrect, and that’s fine with me.
Thanks for your response – and for all the other times you kindly spend time on explaining stuff! )
