Hi,
I’m making a small photo management app called pictkura.
I originally made it for myself.
Over the years I’ve ended up with photos from several cameras and an iPhone, so JPEG, RAW, HEIC and video all live together. To me they’re all just family photos. I wanted to be able to look through them by date without caring too much which camera they came from or what file format they use.
I also shoot RAW+JPEG, but I rarely develop the RAW files. So pictkura doesn’t develop RAW data. It shows the JPEG preview embedded by the camera, and if I really want to work on a photo, I open it later in darktable, RawTherapee or another editor.
pictkura mainly does two things: it imports photos from an SD card into folders by shooting date, and it lets you browse the photos you already have in one place.
It’s MIT-licensed and written in Rust + Tauri. It currently runs on Windows and Apple Silicon Macs; there’s no Linux build yet. The builds are unsigned, so I’ve put the first-launch warnings and other things worth knowing before trying it in the README.
I also used some of the CC0 samples from raw.pixls.us while checking RAW support. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed samples there.
I use Claude Code quite a lot during development, and I also use Claude and Codex for automated code reviews.
It works well for me, but I don’t really know whether this is useful to anyone else. That’s mainly why I’m posting here.
What I’d like to ask is:
- Do you ever want to browse photos from different cameras and phones together like this?
- How do you handle this today?
- If pictkura wouldn’t fit your workflow, what would be the main reason?
“I don’t need this” is a useful answer too. I’m mainly interested in hearing how other people handle this.
There are screenshots and short recordings on the project site if you’d like to see what it looks like in use.
