Playing with different light colors

I am trying to use different colors of light to the advantage of the image.

Like in this self-portrait (somehow I never find someone to stand in for me at Friday nights) where flash light and ambient light mixes. But to me this effect does not stand out as much as would like it to. Ideas for improvement?

Just one of many possibilities

Thanks a lot. Now that I see your versions on my phone - are the ambient lights really green? I am a bit color blind … green lights ?! Can we fix that?

My initial goal was to keep the wb at 5600k (set fixed in the camera) to have accurate skin colors and let the ambient lights do what ever they do. The candle is without relevance just set design.
But now that I see how crazy the ambient lights are - I wish they could be changed to a more modest less greenish color.

Trying a desaturated render, and to keep the dim light atmosphere :grinning: Also I played with the color contrast with blue shadows/yellow highlights

Hmmm. They look yellow to me. But anyway, yes, they can be made any color you want them. That’s why I said, “many possibilities”. I chose what looked natural to me, but it was absolutely an elective choice.

I tried to lighten the left side of your face, but that exaggerated the warm tones coming from the ambient lighting. However, I wonder why your face is partially in darkness? Did you use a remote flash from the right side?

I didn’t change the white balance much because I don’t think the two warm white lights in the background look unnatural at all.

Ok, here is another possibility. In this one, I tampered with the colors as little as possible, using the “As shot” white balance selection.

Thanks for sharing the photo and letting us put a face to your name.

I focus on the color in this edit. I disabled the color calibration module and only worked with the white balance module. I selected the daylight option as the closest choice for the WB of your flash. This left the lamp light a little warm but not crazy warm. So to bring out the yellow warm of the lamp light I adjusted the chroma for the color of the warm lit wall using the color zones module. This also affected the table, so I drew a mask to limit the effect to the wall and the areas of skin.

Yes, off camera flash in a silver reflector. Maybe with diffusion (do not remember which photo was with any which was without).

This is very much in the direction that I was looking for: how to manipulate the ambient lights without touching the skin. I will check how you did later today. Thank you!

RAF->RT: WB off the cup.

RAF-RT means I should use raw therapy? Hopefully that is the right spelling

Thank you for the play.

Edit with ART, GIMP and G’MIC:

nice shot
several different light sources are challenging to me. What i did in RT-dev:

lifting the exposure, brighten up the right half of the pic plus brighten up the right part of the face by selective editing.
The color showed up a bit too reddish in RT, so i moved the tint up to green so the skintone fits to the histogram-line, wanted to keep the warm ambiente.

Not how I spelled it. I said “RAF->RT” meaning that I converted the .raf file to RGB with RawTherapee.

Just saying what I did - not saying that you should.
