I wonder if this image is one open to different interpretations. For one thing, the color I ended up on in my edit is wildly different than the scene in person. It was at sunset after a storm, and the light was a very deep orange.
For another thing, there is a whole lot of noise in the darker parts of the image. Instead of removing it, I added grain all over. Maybe someone would like a smother result? Maybe not everyone would like my crushed shadows? (I experimented with the new darktable neural restore tools, but ended up not using them.)
My edit is influenced by a result I got using spektrafilm, but this is a version I arrived at using darktable alone.

I felt like it’s too dim and needs a brightness and saturation boost in the highlights
I love that I’m seeing so many different color palettes, as no one really knows the scene, so they’re free to make it what they want to see.
Those that are shooting for neutral colors have made nice renders too, but to be completely honest, in person everything was heavily tinted orange, just other-wordly uncomfortable level of orange. I rarely see it, and my son gets stressed by it. It’s what launched me outdoors with a camera in the first place. I find it funny that given that, I share a version that looked nothing like it, lol
