Problem with defringe

used the Defringe tool with the curve edited to handle blues instead of purple.
It worked, but now the smaller red apples have a large red shadow around them.

I have twisted the defringe parameters until this problem is reduced, but I was not able to fix it.
Does anybody have a suggestion for resolving this problem?
