How can I process this without clipping the reds?
If I lift the blacks in AgX, then I lose contrast.

This is what I got. The red part of the dewlap is a bit washed out.

Don’t worry about clipping indicators, if the image looks OK.

Hey, thanks for sharing, great shot… how about this on RT 5.12-376 (5.13 rc1)… General hyperbolic stretch, Colour and Light spot for the red and then a full image colour adjustment; no clipping of reds after the GHS.

This one is a very colorful lizard indeed - peacock blue and a bright orange.
Seen only during peak summer months here. This was shot when the temperature was 44degrees C!
And it comes and does this display to attract the female only when there is very good sunlight. Shines like a jewel in the sun!

Lovely picture, well taken!
But decided for a rather tight crop as if this fellow is fighting the picture frame I applied… First experiments with the sharpen module. Used contrast equalizer, tone equalizer, no tone mapping module used,color balance rgb, local contrast and some details enhancing the eye the main…
At first wanted a bit darker version to have the colors more saturated but finally decided to lift the exposure.

The eye does bring it to life. Did you do a local edit to brighten the eye?
I avoid local edits since I can’t get it to look natural.
This one doesn’t look like the effect I get with a local edit.

Glad you like it! @gopal , yes the eye is a local edit. I used a very small elipse to focus it on the eye and color balance rgb and local contrast to enhance the eye to my liking. It’s on the edge of overdoing. Thanks to @Popanz I shift my limits gradually…
And I used a large transition zone between full appliance and nothing avoiding sharp boundaries.
Do you know how to make a duplicate picture and connect an xmp. file to that? Once you know how to do that it becomes very easy to follow others edits.
