Cleaned up the cellar entrance with my 5 y.o. yesterday. We raked, we sweeped and shoeveled the twigs and leaves into his little toy trailer. Finally  !

So GrapheneOS is sometimes being associated with criminals. I’m waiting for a ban proposal to “combat crime”

Fairly sure criminals sometimes use iPhones too. And cars. Oh, and I bet they breathe air, too!

Shhh don’t give them ideas

Yes, but they have backdoors for the iPhones

So, yeah, the only sensible response to these things would’ve been an outright ban due to the hairy privacy implications, and the fact that the companies pushing this stuff are the worst offenders in this space.

Of course, that’s not going to happen. But a man can dream.

So my province of British Columbia has finally decided that we will no longer change our clocks twice a year. Our clocks will go forward one last time on Sunday, and then we will stay on Pacific Time.

What I found funny was that one of the stated reasons was because of “dogs getting up at the wrong time” I would argue that they were getting up at the right time, but we just had set the clocks at the wrong time.

I have been so busy that all the random things I encounter cannot be shared. By the time I have a sec, whatever it was is so passe. Oh well, this thread is active and interesting enough.

@europlatus I feel that the main reason is for Canada to sync with the US. I am of the same opinion as your comment: we should just set our clocks at the right time and have our elbows up while at it.

This is great news! There is presently a new petition to the Government of Canada to eliminate the two clock changes every year (woo-hoo!) and implement Standard time as the ongoing time (horrible!). An MP has unfortunately agreed to sponsor the petition.

I read about it some more. It looks like they are adopting permanent daylight saving time and calling it Pacific Time (UTC-7).

The nuance is that certain southeastern regions in BC will continue to be aligned with Alberta’s MST/MDT (UTC-7/UTC-6).

Yes, we actually “voted” for it about 5 years ago, but it was somewhat controversial because they didn’t even give us the option of staying on Standard time (UTC-8). Several sleep experts spoke up saying that staying on Daylight Savings Time (UTC-7) would be detrimental to our health, and the idea should be scrapped.

But the official reason we didn’t adopt it straight away was because of the States, specifically Washington, Oregon and California. Apparently, trade would suffer terribly. That decision never sat well with me because we seemed to be fine with a time change with Alberta, the rest of Canada and even in several parts of BC, but apparently it was crucial for business to stay aligned with the Western states.

They are taking far too long to make a decision (apparently still awaiting Congress approval), and as we are now trying to untangle our economies, the reason for not changing was no longer there. I imagine many people have asked the BC government why we are waiting for the States when the current administration is so unfriendly to us. Fair point (although we generally consider Washington, Oregon and California to be friendly states).

The whole thing was really annoying because we (the population) were asked for our opinion, we gave it, the answer was a crushing “yes, scrap the time change”, and then the government did absolutely nothing and sat on it for many years.

But it’s finally done. Let’s see if we love it or hate it, and more importantly, whether our dogs finally get breakfast at the time they know it should be!

Yesterday we watched “Don’t Look Up”, a movie from 2021, where they discover a comet heading for earth, but the president is too preoccupied with social media to realize what’s going to happen, the media itself is too wound up in the controversy of the day, and we can’t trust the tech billionaire to do anything that doesn’t make them money.

It was incredibly prescient a movie from 2021. It hurt to watch in 2026. Recommended.

Recently a cousin of mine asked what he should study after school, given the advent of AI. I could only answer that his life is out of distribution from my training and I have no clue.

My hypothesis
The Oldest Profession(s) are probably also the Profession that stay around the longest.

Kind of invariable of how the apocalypses will play out.

Of causes only a unlikely over simplification but a “random-thought”

Prostitute? I kid, this will probably be replaced by some humanoid bot in a decade or two.

It sort of makes sense, but I think it’s not always a certain rule, look at all the lumberjacks, farmers, bakers, etc, who got their workforce hugely reduced over time.

I think the best for employ-ability is healthcare, as the population ages we will need an increasing number of nurses and other healthcare professionals to take care of the elderly. Population collapse keeps happening and there is only so many immigrants countries can import.

Not in particular but this is one of the popular claims for oldest professions.

in the “short” therm there will be humanoid bot or VR/AR, Brain Implants or what ever…

But in some sort of “end of humanity” scenario i assume there will be time period where no technology but the simplest will work, knowledge is lost and we will be thrown back century’s.

I really enjoyed that movie, although I was expecting it to be more of a comedy rather than a crushingly depressing movie (because of how accurate it is). But I did laugh quite a lot, especially the end scene with Jonah Hill.

I liked my early Thinkpads, moved to Dell when my wife became a laptop user, mainly because of my employer sourcing service returns, and moved to Windows Surface products mainly because of the magnetic charger socket that didn’t break so easily. I think I’ll put Thinkpads back in the source-selection space if they’re that serious about repairability, 'specially the battery replacement.
