RAW Processing separating sky from ground.

I have trouble with processing sky and ground, and usually I resort to lots of manipulation. I’d like to keep it within a RAW editor, so exactly how I can process these separately. Making the mask to separate the two in a external software isn’t difficult, so I’d be fine with two different setups.

For now, I’m using Darktable. So, that would be preferable, but I’d be fine with other approaches too.

Can you share an image?

It’s more of a general topic, but here’s a test image in question:

Yes, I’m aware of the vignette.

Hello,

I think you can isolate the sky using a mask like this one.

I did a quick and dirty one at the tree line and then just messed around…

The mask should be easy enough to make for that image (as @difrkaguilar has shown), if dt has a levels Threshold function like in the GIMP.

Difficulty appears when the levels in the sky are not sufficiently distinct from the ground - and perhaps we should concentrate on that aspect rather than stating the obvious re: masking.

I think that would be the parametric mask on either the g or Jz channel to set and feather the threshold if I understand what you are saying

There was actually a new video today that does a nice job of demonstrating landscape masking

With a simple image like this a gradient mask would be appropriate and simulates the gradient filters some photographers use on cameras.

a parametric mask based on luminosity and limited to the sky region by the addition of a drawn mask would work fine here.
