RAW Therapee Won't Stay Open On Screen

Hi; new here and first post.

My system = Win 7 Pro, 64-bit

I recently downloaded RT version 4.2.1 from the official Raw Therapee site.

Now that I have it loaded into my system, R/T refuses to stay open/on-screen for more than the briefest second; I click “open”, the R/T window appears for a split second, and then it vanishes/closes.
I have tried uninstall/reinstall; I have completely uninstalled and started all over; I have restarted the computer several times; all with the same result — R/T just will not remain open.

How can I fix this ?

Thanks.

Yikes. Did it ever load on for you, or has it always been this way? I know there was an issue with the cluts directory once upon a time, but it may have been fixed since…

If you’d like to file a bug report, see How to write useful bug reports - RawPedia

You’ll need the debug version of RT from http://rawtherapee.com/downloads

No, it never has loaded; it has been like this from the beginning.

I am not techy at all, so the simplest roadblock can stop me in my tracks.

Can I have both, the stable version and the debug version, loaded at the same time ?

The description says that the debug version is considerably slower; are they meaning slower to load or slower in performing ?

Thanks so much.

@BuckSkin Hi and welcome!
It is easier to have just one version installed at a time.
You only use the debug version until it crashes and you have some data to send to the developers.

RT 4.2.1 is very old. I would start by downloading RT 4.2.1005 fast version. If it misbehaves as well, then I would download RT 4.2.1005 debug version and follow the instructions given by paperdigits (above).

I did not see a 4.2.1005 version when using the official site sort filter, specifying my specifics until the field narrowed down.

I will look through the whole list without using the filter and see if I can find it.

Since my last post, I completely removed RT, every file and all, and started over fresh.

I thought downloading it during “off peak” (2:AM to 8:AM), when Dish gives me faster internet speed, might be the cure; but, alas, it works no better.

Funny thing is, at the same time, I installed it in our other computer, Win 7 Pro brand-new, and it works fine; that computer has an entirely empty picture gallery and is a performance racehorse, so that may very well have played a part.

Where can I find the minimum system requirements for RT; it may just be that this computer isn’t up to the task; it is a desktop and works fine with other photo programs.

Thanks for the help.

FIXED IT !!!

I found the 4.2.1005 version on the un-filtered list, fifth choice down from the top.

I got rid of the 4.2.1 and installed the 4.2.1005 and that version will open and stay there.

Now, if I can just figure out what to do with it now that I have it.

How much better/what is different between the two versions ?

Should I put the 4.2.1005 version in the other computer as well, or just leave the 4.2.1 alone, seeing as how it seems to work on that computer.

Thanks ever so much for everyone’s help.

Good!

What to do with it? I suggest that you read the suggestions given here:

Well, a year and a half of development and that is a lot

Yes, I would use 4.2.1005 on both machines.

Have fun!

Hey @BuckSkin

  1. Don’t use 4.2.1 as its very old, use the latest development version. We are releasing RT5 soon and the latest development versions are a precursor to that.

Thanks so much; I am so glad that I brought my questions here.

I will definitely remove 4.2.1 from the other machine and install 4.2.1005 on it as well.

After looking the empty RT window over, with all the various controls that look like Ukranian to me, I am sure this is only the beginning of my questions.

There are a lot of knobs! Have you used any other photo adjustment programs? Are you familiar with the basics of editing a photograph, such as exposure, contrast, and sharpening? We’ll help you take it one tool at s time.

Here is a tutorial that I believe is valuable for one who has just downloaded RT: https://paulsphotopalace.wordpress.com/1-the-auto-way

Apart from that: just go ahead and ask.

I am actually fairly decent with Photoshop Elements 7; I can stumble through Canon DPP; I am raw beginner with Luminance HDR, etc., etc.

Thanks for pointing out the tutorial.
