RawTherapee output dimensions larger than originals

Hey…
I shoot with the Nikon D800 and in every software that can open the NEFs, the picture dimensions are: 7360x4912
Why is it that the TIFFs I export from RT are 7370 by 4916?

Thanks
David

Not that you necessarily have a bug, but making a good report with details is helpful for everyone to understand the problem and propose a solution.

Converting the raw data to an image involves calculating the missing colour data from the surrounding cells, e.g. for a red cell, green and blue have to be calculated from surrounding green and blue cells. Not just the immediate neighbouring cells, the next few in all directions (number depends on the algorithm).
As you get to the edge of the sensor, you are missing some of those surrounding cells, so the edge is cut from the final image to avoid artefacts from the raw conversion. Some software plays it safer than others.

Probably the smaller dimensions are those of the embedded preview. The raw files usually contain more pixels than are usually output from a raw conversion. Not all of them are useful, but dependent on the converter the number of output pixels can vary slightly.

Great explanation, guys!
I was worried that some sort of re-sampling was taking place but as it turns out, with RT I just literally get a few extra pixels on each side.

Thanks!

Actually that would make a great advertisement campaign for FLOSS raw converters: Get more megapixels out of your raw than with the proprietary competitors ;-).

On the other hand, your 100% viewfinders are sliiiightly less accurate.

With my cameras, the increased size is not symmetrical, there is more gain on the right side and bottom than the top and left.
