Anyone having compared, say
Hexanon 50mm/1.4 with
Hexanon 50mm/1.7?
The latter is said to be of
Ultimate sharpness™…
Or rather: any Hexanon 50mm/x.x
versus the f1.7?

Oh, @afre,
then you should see my Opinels, or
my Spyderco “Superblue”…
Well, I have not tested the Hexanon, but I owned and tested a lot of 50mm manual prime lenses of the 60’s and 70’s. The best lens that I tested in terms of sharpness is a Yashinon DX 50 - 1.4. . The Yashinon seems very similar in construction to the Hexanon, same number of optical elements (7 in 6 groups), same weight, same aperture blades. Of course, the sharpness improves a lot if you close a bit the aperture. It is not fair to compare the sharpness of a 1.7 with that of a 1.4 at full aperture. If you use both say at F 4 the 1.4 outperforms the 1.7. However, sharpness is not the only parameters as you may know better than I. In this regard, I like very much my Yashinon which I use often with my Sony. Fujinon and Takumar are comparable and only marginally worse than the Yashinon. To be precise, the resolution I measured with my Yashinon gets down to the order of the sensor pixel size, so it is not a limiting factor. More important is proper focusing which may be challenging with a manual lens
. This chat may become long at this point, and I am not sure how many frequenters of this site could find it interesting …
Bottom line, if you find one of these lenses at 30-40 euro/dollars, buy it and enjoy it. It is also a lot fun to clean and repair them …
50mm/f1.0 from Fuji. Clearly the bestest 50mm on the market
Thank you, @darix
Have you seen its price tag? Gulp.
I can get approximately 100 Hexanon AR 50mm
lenses for the same amount…

That must be what makes it the bestestest!
the light transfer wont get better if you stack 100 50mm lenses in front of each other
Maybe not vintage, but I love my Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 Series E lens. (I also have the 100mm f/2.8 and 70-210 f/4 – I love them too).
Sorry, the 50mm f1.7 is not part of my collection (yet)
.
That’s next on my list. I’ve got the Fuji 56 f/1.2 and just never been that wowed buy it.
On my Nikon stuff I’ve had a few version of their 50mms over the last 20 or so years. Currently have the 50mm f/1.4 AF-S and while it’s stellar on lower resolution sensors it feels meh on the D800 and D850. Been looking at a Sigma ART to replace it as those seem to do better. F-mount stuff is getting cheap.
