I’m pretty new to darktable, and weirdly find cropping to be one of my hangups. I’m curious how y’all would edit this.

Welcome here!
And cropping is a very intuitive action… as is interpreting a picture. There are infinite ways to do it. Sometimes very surprising when somebody takes a very different approach to it.
Did some playing around, with ‘a bit’ of cropping too ![]()
Bit extreme interpretation maybe…
Hope you like it nevertheless…! I found it a very nice picture with this beautiful creature.
I have a cropping preset that I use as I usually just crop in to whatever removes distractions and or focusses on the subject. What I did was set a fairly large offset to each edge. I did this because I often find what I deem to be the perfect crop when I am panning around and zooming in and out.
Using this preset the manual boundaries will appear when I am zoomed in on that crop and location and I just drag them to the edges of the screen/preview to complete the crop.
I think I proposed a sort of crop to zoom feature several years ago but it didn’t get any traction so maybe this is just a weirdo thing that I like to do…
Otherwise like others I just crop as I see fit from looking at the full preview…
Sometimes it helps to rotate the picture. But I have to admit, this is a hard one and I’m not fully satisfied with my result.
Welcome to pixls.us, @my_dad . As @Jetze said, just crop to your liking. There’s no reason to get hung up on it. If you decide you don’t like what you did, just go back and re-do it.
Thats what I usually do, but more often than not I’m never quite happy with how it turns out. Hopefully more practice will help.

Because it has the colors of the classic amazing spiderman’s costume ![]()
Well spotted!
I like close-ups, but here I think keeping a distance helps highlight the scale of the subject, so I kept most of those two big leaves in.
Lots of contrast equaliser to bring up some detail and to darken the shadowed part a bit more. I don’t think it blends well with the highlights on the left now, however.
What an amazing creature.

I like your version!
Have no hearts left - spent all of them. I’ll have to be more ‘famous’ to acquire more hearts to spent… LOL
So type a message instead…
I didn’t realise that happens. It was one amazing creature. I have nothing like that here in Tasmania.

Just couldn’t get photographically inspired for this one. Thought I would try to turn it into a tapestry, but not that good of result, either. lol
