Definitely one of those cases where the most you can hope for is moderate improvement rather than a “fix”. I just did a quick a dirty edit using Color Balance RGB and a mask to lift shadows and adjust colour:

More aggressive editing would rapidly become unnatural in my opinion. Short of finding a program that adds a light, I think the best you can do is reduce the contrast between light and shade a little bit.
