After a BSOD I learned today the hard way that GIMP does not have an autosave feature. I had trouble to believe it.

I think that autosave would not only improve user experience, but is something everybody expect from any powerful image editing software.

More details on the request :

  • GIMP can autosave.
  • Timing of autosave can be configured.
  • Number of autosaves can be configured.
  • Path of autosaves can be configured.

For Gimp 3 there are a couple of plugins here:

Jehan is working on a new XCF format that will make autosave very efficient (extending our GEGL buffers to automatically sync between the canvas and the file).
