Hi, I’m using the Ubuntu Dev version. A couple of questions please, @Dariusz_Duma mainly…
How do I know when a new version comes out? Is it posted in this forum?
Secondly, like many, I invest much time and effort in processing photos, so it would be nice to have the security of knowing that if a new Dev version came out which happened to have problems, I could go back to a previous version. I found recently you have to remove your current version in order to install a new one. If I’m prepared to store more stuff locally and (I guess) do a more complicated build process, is there a way I can keep a favourite version intact, but also build the latest version please?
Thanks, Andrew
If you were to use software that’s under development you should expect bugs from time to time. As a general rule, development versions are not to be used on production machines because things can go wrong and there is no wind-back to the previous dev release. The main purpose of a dev release is for the developers to allow others to test the software and report bugs to be fixed prior to going stable.
So if you require stability, as it seems you do, stick with the stable release, until the current dev is released as stable.
With regard to update notifications, these should automatically show up in Update Manager upon refresh, either on boot or manually. You could also check Darius’s Launchpad page to see what the latest version of software is available for your distro release.

I suppose, that you’ve PPA Highly Explosive added to the system - so, when new version will hit the PPA, your system update system will inform you about that. Rawtherapee-unstable is automatically compiled every day from Github sources, so nobody is able to put any release info.

In fact, Rawtherapee-unstable is very stable. When you need super stability, then you have to stick with regular Rawtherapee - unfortunately, it’s very old release without plenty of filters/effects/optymalizations. If you would rather to work with unstable version, it’s wise keep package archive - you’ll be able to find previous version in /var/cache/apt/archives.
That’s the job of your package manager, in this case APT.
If you are referring to your (or someone’s) having had to remove rawtherapee-data and some other package to install the latest version, that is a solution to a problem not originating in RawTherapee but in Ubuntu packaging. Probably something with the PPA changed, I don’t remember the details.
If you want to keep many versions alongside, if the Ubuntu package manager doesn’t let you do that, compile RawTherapee yourself and store each build in its own folder.
Rawtherapee-unstable (PPA) is in conflict with rawtherapee-data, so when you gonna install unstable version, rawtherapee-data is automatically removed.
Thank you for the explanation.
hi Darius, your last sentence sounds like what I’m trying to do. I looked in this folder and there’s a rawtherapee-unstable xxxxxxx .deb file, 9.5Mb, dated 7 Jan. I re-built RT yesterday, so is this .deb file the version I removed yesterday? And if so, what would I do to re-install it if I wanted to, please?
Whilst looking just now, I noticed lots and lots of files in the Home folder which I hadn’t noticed before RT. They are zero length text files called .goutputstream-X where X is 6 characters of random-looking stuff. Are they to do with RT and can I delete them?
Thanks, Andrew
…last sentence in your previous post …
Just simply:
sudo dpkg -i rawtherapee_you_have_found.deb
That will replace any version with this one in .deb.
