Siril 1.2.0-rc1 - File Browser Does Not Work on M1 Mac - Apple Silicon and Intel Versions

Hi,
I’ve been using SiriL v1.0.6 for a long time and it works OK on my M1 Mac.

Today I downloaded v1.2.0-RC1 for Apple Silicon.

It launched OK and everything seems to work, with one exception - the file browser does not open when you try to set the Working Directory, or try to select calibration files in the PreProcessing preference pane.

I also downloaded the Intel version - exactly the same result.

Seems like a bug in this version.

If there had been such a bug, I think we’d have received tons of complaints about it. But that’s not the case.
Do you have an up-to-date macOS?

Hi,
Yes - I would have expected that too … its a strange one.

My Mac is reasonably up to date -

Mac = M1 Max Studio = Mac13,1 (model Z14J00070X/A)
MacOS = Ventura 13.5.1

I dont have similar issues with any other apps, and SiriL v 1.0.6 works perfectly OK.

But, I have the same issue with 1.2.0-rc1 for both Apple Silicon and Intel, which suggests either something very weird with my Mac, or something unexpected happening in Siril.

I will test this with 13.5.2 and see whether it behaves the same way.

Unfortunately, its the same with MacOS 13.5.2.

Something interesting :-

Siril does NOT open a file browser when selecting :-

  1. Open
  2. Set Working Directory
  3. Prefs / Pre-processing

However, it DOES open a file browser when clicking one of the folder icons in :-

  1. Prefs / Miscellaneous / Software location
  2. Image Processing/Merge CFA channels
  3. Image Processing/Image compositing

It’s difficult to see how this behaviour could be caused by something specific to my system, but I’m happy to test further if that helps.

Using Siril 1.2.0 with Macbook Pro M1 MacOS 13.5.2 and I’m seeing the same problem of not being able to open WorkSpace (Didge Gary has the same problem!). Able to use file browser in Preferences like Didge Gary. Previously was able to use Siril 1.2.0rc but have updated MacOS since then. Makes Siril unusable!

The MacOS version may present various user interface bugs that we are unable to correct. This is due to a bug in the graphics library we use. See the origin here: widgets not reacting to mouse hover/click on macOS Ventura (#5305) · Issues · GNOME / gtk · GitLab

However, the tests I conducted showed that Siril has been working well on Ventura lately.
But I can’t say more about this… This bug is far beyond my skills.

To open workspace however you have keyboard shortcuts, like Ctrl+D

Following on from Bob’s comments, it’s reassuring that the issue has been corroborated by another user describing the same issues as in my original post.

The Ventura ‘widget’ bug appears to be related to a different problem - which I hope will be fixed when Sonoma is released later today.

The thing that makes me doubt whether this is an OS bug is that calling the file browser works in some areas of Siril, but not others, and the behaviour is the same in the Apple Silicon and Intel builds.

Regarding shortcuts …
CTRL+D doesn’t work either unfortunately - in fact, none of the keyboard shortcuts I tried worked.

Also I’m not entirely sure why ‘Meta’ is used in the shortcuts pref panel to refer to the CTRL key ??
This isn’t consistent with the latest GUI documentation here.

So, unfortunately, SiriL remains unusable for me, which is a real shame because it is (or was) exrtremely useful.

Did you tried with cmd key?

Yes I did …

I tried all possible combinations of modifier keys - none of the shortcuts seemed to work.

Also - can you tell me why the prefs panel displays ‘Meta’ rather than CTRL ?

Because apple system uses cmd keys while all other systems Ctrl.

I see.
However that is very confusing - I’ve never seen ‘Meta’ used in this context, and it appears to be undocumented.

It would be nicer to use terms specific to the platform - usually part of the localisation.

When it comes to keyboard shortcuts, unfortunately the meta key doesn’t work either

mata is the word used by many FOSS. This is why I did used that.

Fair enough.

But I dont think it works very well for a FOSS running on a commercial OS,
particularly MacOS which has very well defined GUI / usability guidelines.

But dont get me wrong - I think SiriL is great, Im just disappointed that it doesnt work on my system.

Small Update.
At my work, I have a macOS with the last updated Ventura (13.6).
I can confirm that I have no issue with any buttons.

One thing that does not work, the red button to close dialogs. But it can be closed by the cancel button.

Ah - that is good news (about SiriL working on your work Mac).

I have many Macs here - all running MacOS 13.6.

I tested SiriL v1.2.0 (build 8653 - commit 2405ff9) on several of them :-

Intel Mac

  • File browser open dialog : works OK
  • Close / Minimise / Zoom buttons do not work at all

M1 Mac

  • File browser open dialog : fault as per my original post
  • Close / Minimise buttons do not work at all
  • Zoom button seems to work OK.

IMHO :-

  • the file browser issue appears to be related to the CPU moreso than the OS.
  • the buttons issue seems to be related to the SiriL build.

Anyway, I hope that’s helpful

No issues here as well: plain vanilla MBA M2 16GB MacOS 13.6

I had some problems with v1.2.0-RC1 (M2 Mac Mini), but I switched back to beta2 and it seemed to work well. I have since switched to full v1.2.0, and have not any major problems. There is an annoying problem when some of the menus open over the image they may not display properly. However, that gets solved, when I move the menu bar of the menu to the console screen.
