SOOOO impressed with darktable

Now I’ve taken time to learn darktable (although I’ve yet to really plumb the depths of everything), I’m just SO impressed with what darktable does to my images. I tend to normally shoot with black and white in mind, but every now and again I’ll process a colour.

Here are a couple of variants of one image taken as part of an ongoing project, and I’m just incredibly impressed with what I can get now.

…and this thing is FREE!!!

Very very cool images. I think I prefer the color since the little bits of color add a lot of mystery thriller vibes.

Yeah, on this occasion, Thumper, I think I would agree with you. I don’t often shoot colour, but this one I’m pleased with.

Fully agree with you on darktable…

The color one - both actually - is (are) very nice!!

You may experiment with something in between too. F.i. use the b&w version, make duplicate and then make the module used to get to b&w partly transparent getting back only a slight coloration (if that’s a true English word). Have fun!

I find shooting into a forest and coming back with a good image is one of the most challenging to things to pull off. This one succeeds admirably.
I also prefer the color version in this case. Ditto about dt being awsome.

I can’t tell why, but I enjoy the photo very much. Is it a mist, darkness or softness in the picture, perhaps? Don’t know…

Great photos! I think that the mist reduces the business in the background that you would otherwise get from foliage. There are (will be) other tools in Darktable to help with this, see

and the subsequent dicussion.

Beautiful. The colour captures the mystique a little more - for me

Thanks mate. I took a look at it and it really feels like this could help. I’ve only just started using Darktable, so even updating to the latest version is something I’m going to need to learn, let alone grabbing new modules from github :joy:
