"Specular lowlights"

Any tips on how I can remove/replace/invert the dark bits in the glass here?

I’m photographing some stained glass and the wavy structure of this bit has pulled in something dark from out of shot.
I need to change only the dark bits in the glass but leave the surroundings intact…

What software are you using?

In the GIMP apply the colors>threshold function to isolate the dark bits (I used value of 0.871), then export and invert to create a black-and-white mask. Add the mask to the original and edit to taste. Here’s the mask I made:

The mask is not perfect, a different threshold setting might be better. Or smooth the mask a bit. Or both.

I’ve exported from Rawtherapee to GIMP

This worked really nicely - thank you.
Threshold is going to be a really useful tool for me.
