Strange artefacts in DT 3.0 Export

I exported this from DT 3.0 after various manipulations. It looks OK in the darkroom view but when I display it I get these strange white lines on parts of the image, mostly in the dark area.

This is just the exported view, I am happy to upload the raw NEF file and any other information necessary to determine the cause.

Please could you upload your xmp file. First thoughts - are you using the color zones module?

XMP file for the image.

Yes, I am using the colour zones module, is this bad?_CTW0132.NEF.xmp (8.3 KB)

No, but in darktable 3.0 it defaults to “strong” mode, which is known to cause artifacts (regression of color zones module in 3.0 · Issue #4023 · darktable-org/darktable · GitHub). Try changing it to “smooth” mode.

If that’s the same xmp you used for this image, I don’t think color zones is switched on.

You are right.

I redid the image step by step. The effect occurs when I use a low pass filter to try and bring some detail back into the shadows.

It’s worth switching some of the other modules on-and-off just in case it’s an error caused by a combination of modules. Find the minimum number of modules required to reproduce it then raise an issue on github.

OK, will do.

Many thanks for all your help. I consider myself very much a learner driver when it comes to DT and I am always appreciative of those that help.

Is this sufficient smarm to ask what you would do to bring details back into the shadows?

There’s what I might do and then there’s what the best thing to do is. I’ve been using darktable for a few years and I still consider myself a learner, especially now darktable 3 is out.

I’m going to skirt the question a bit and recommend that you search around the forum for guidelines to the new ‘linear RGB workflow’ (if you haven’t already) and getting to know the ‘filmic rgb’ and ‘tone equalizer’ specifically.
