The first image is an export after all the required modules are applied. The second image is an export after the crop module is also applied over and above the earlier modules. It only happens with this image which means that my preference settings are not the source of the problem. Also, the artefacts are not visible in Lighttable nor in Darkroom, only in the exported jpg files.
@Claes , Namaste and Namakar, both, are fine. I am pleasantly surprised at the ease with which you said it though
Thank you for trying it out but now I don’t know what is wrong with my setup. I tried out my issue multiple times - a few days back when I posted on FB, then earlier today when I posted on this site, and right now after your reply. At least my setup is consistently producing the problem.
Anyway, as I said it happens only for this particular image. Thank you once again.
@lphilpot thank you for your response, too! And I have to say it doesn’t work on my machine. It used to, on the older versions but not now. Whether I left-click or right-click on the logo on top right corner I get the standard Windows dialogue for Move-Restore-Close. There is something really odd about the installation that I have managed to create. Anyway, thank you.
It is probably worth upgrading to version 4.4 which was released a few days ago and hopefully the problem will just go away. If it persists that might be informative. install | darktable
I’m not familiar with Windows drivers, but on Linux, it’s a 3-digit number like 525. The search at Official Drivers | NVIDIA also reports such a number for Windows:

Edit: on a forum, I found this, so it’s probably the same.
What do you get with the command-line switch -d common
That should log the info most useful for troubleshooting to C:\Users\your-user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\darktable\darktable-log.txt.
You may also try deleting all cached thumbnails, maybe that would solve the filmstrip issue? C:\Users\your-user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\darktable\mipmaps-some-ugly-code-here.d.
I’ll send you darktable-log.txt directly by email.
In short after removing files I didn’t see any difference in Lighttable and Darkroom: there is no more trouble with NEF files.
FYI I created DNG files from the NEF files using DxO DeepPRIME with the aim of testing DxO demosaic software. I’m no longer using it.
DNG files can be omited
I never used darktable command arguments with Windows. I dig a little bit the online documentation and understood I should use luarc for it. I have to learn about it before coming back to you.
