Over on Strobist there’s a great new post where David Hobby uses a careful placement of light (softlighter 60") and reflector while feathering in the key light to produce a wonderful, natural looking portrait:

They key to keeping the portrait looking natural is firing the softlighter down, and adjusting the feathering into the subject:
