Ive looked in the user manual but cannot find what I am looking for.
I have many styles that I want to put into the “styles” section. Issue is the names of each style might not tell what the style is used for. E.G. if its for color, black & white, saturation etc. Having to apply each style to an image until you find the one you need, makes it difficult and is time consuming.
Is there a way you can create “directories” within “styles”, label the directory Color, B&W etc. and then place each of the individual styles into the appropriate directory?
This works similar to hierarchies for presets:
To have two styles (e.g. mystyle1 and mystyle2) in a common “folder”, you have to rename them and add the name of the category/folder to the styles’ name separated by | (vertical bar character), e.g.
“Color|mystyle1” and “Color|mystyle2”.
Ive not used presets before, so any help is appreciated. I have directories on my computer already with styles in them.
If I rename those directories the way you show, will I be able to import those correctly named directories with the styles included into “styles”?

I know a few developers look at this forum and are working on ideas to improve the UI or the way things work in DT, so here is a suggestion from me stolen from how my email account works.
I suggest that when we create or edit a style we should get an option to nest the new style under a label name. It already can be done as pointed out by @deekay but it is not obvious to the average user how to do this. The same approach could be applied to presets.
Just tested how the current system works.
I edited (duplicated) my R7 Provia Look style and when saving the edit put “R7 |” in front of the name. This sent the duplicate style off to a directory/group named R7. If the style was saved with just the name R7 Provia it joined a longer list of ungrouped styles. Depending how many styles you have I personally find expanding groups more time consuming than glancing through a long list of styles. But DT is about choice.
No, it is the name of the style that has to follow the pattern as I have described and @Terry has shown above in the screenshots. It is also not sufficient to change the filename of the style on OS level. Unless there is some trick I do not know, I guess you have to import all the styles and change the names in darktable by editing the styles in the styles module.
