I found that when downscaling an image for JPEG export that I lose some detail, which I would expect. I was playing with styles under the export module to apply an instance of sharpening to counteract the effect and I was curious if the style is applied before or after DT resizes the image.
Adding to what Bill wrote:
If high-quality resampling is enabled, downscaling happens after all processing is done. If it is off, the image is downscaled early, to save processing effort. Some modules (those involving a radius of some sort) may work differently. The same happens in the darkroom, where you have a toggle to turn full-resolution processing on or off (default is off, to make the editor more responsive), or where the view can change if you zoom in.
The developers try to keep the difference as low as possible, and there have been improvements, but some just cannot be avoided.
To sharpen the final processed data, use the script that Bill suggested. That runs ‘outside’ (after) the pipeline.
Thanks, I haven’t played with scripts but I’ll check it out. Honestly, saving to a resized TIFF and post sharpening in DT or GIMP isn’t that much of a chore if that doesn’t work out.
