Reminds me of “The mote in God’s eye” by Pournelle and Niven. An alien civilization has almost destroyed itself so many times, that they leave clues for the next cycle, some of which can only be unlocked after they reach a certain level of knowledge. A fun read.
BTW, a Z80 is not a bad choice to build a new technical civilization on.
