Hi @jimd!
Fun to play with — but tricky as well.
I used your .xmp as a base and just
added a few things.

What a nice photo!
What a pity about the sensor … I had to look up in a dictionary on “molded”
Tried to hide the mold using two local spots

With rawtherapee there is a module that is to remove defects or spots from the sensor.
In rawpedia:
https://rawpedia.rawtherapee.com/Local_Adjustments#Removing_sensor_defects_or_spots
Tab: Local Adjustments → module:Local Contrast & Wavelets → mode: Advanced → submodule Pyramid 2 → Contrast by level
The module looks like this:
If with that particular camera, all the photos show that stain on the sensor you can make a profile and create a rule in the dynamic profiles for that camera, so when you open for the first time an image taken with that camera that profile will be applied and the defect will be eliminated.
Greetings!
oohh, now thats an idea…
'bout ye mucker?
thats a neat trick - a lot less effort than masking out the infection
cheers
is it not a bit early for Christmas baubles?
vkdt render. i tried to use the “wavelet retouch” preset but that doesn’t work in this kind of defect. so i used the “inpaint” preset. only painted out the right side with a few brush strokes:
