Trying to understand the radius slider in shadows/highlights tool

Rawpedia says:

The value of the Radius slider influences the Highlights, Shadows and Local Contrast sliders. The larger the radius, the stronger the effect of local contrast. The effective area of the Highlights and Shadows sliders also increases.

I have the impression that the transition area of the mask is also affected. With larger radius values I get stronger local contrast as mentioned above, but I also seem to increase the transition gradient from the edge between light parts and shadow parts (smoothing out the mask at the edges).
Or in simpler words, I like the local contrast with higher radius values and I like the masking with lower radius values.

Is it possible to detach the radius slider from the mask?
Or am I misinterpreting/misunderstanding something?

Edit: Sorry, mental lapsus, I meant the shadows/highlights tool. :grimacing: Changed the title accordingly.

Which radius slider in tone mapping tool? There is none.
