The resent 8.0.0 upgrade put tiny little face thumbnails into the Tags Sidebar my 67 year old eyes couldn’t have made out in better days. I don’t mind the little smiley face icons. I’ve tried resetting the icon which temporarily brings back the smiley faces, but thumbnails return on the next start. I have face recognition turned of in Configure Digikam.
If you don’t have face tags (rectangles) in your images, you can change the face tags (smiley) back to normal tags in the context menu of the people view.
Normally, however, these smiley tags arise because digiKam finds face tags in the metadata of the images.

While I think people still might want to know, the problem has probably become moot for me after I discovered Tags > Properties > Icon:, where I found face icons that seem to be sticking between restarts. I also just discovered > Icon: > Other, so hopefully I can use nearly any icon I want.
I think my comment would now be I would think " Reset Tag Icon" should stick between startups.
The “Reset Icon” function only resets an existing image or graphic to the standard. However, your tags are marked as face tags. This is reset in the People view with the “Unmark Tags As Face” function.
