Upgrading from 3.8 to 4.0

Hi,

On Ubuntu OS 22.04 I’m running dt 3.8.1. I’ve looked at many webpages and can’t see any info on how to upgrade to 4.0.

Do I uninstall first? The darktable webpage shows only install information.

Any references that I can read?

Thanks,
Rob.

Check official darktable website on this page : install | darktable
You have all needed packages on OBS repository. Better to follow instructions to add repository than grab packages manually. First option will allow to install needed dependencies (like exiv2 package and especially good version).

Last thing: this had been discussed many times (how to install/upgrade). It’s good to search on forums, there’s often information on how to do…

Hi,

How did you install 3.8.1 in the first place ? If it’s via the standard packages then I doubt that they have the most up to date version of DT.

I’m on Ubuntu 20.04 and I used OBS to upgrade to 4.0, detailed here : Install package graphics:darktable / darktable

Do I uninstall first?
No.

Phil.

Thanks for Response Nilvus. I got confused between the xUbuntu and Ubuntu as the OBS seems to have only references for xUbuntu. On researching what xBunutnu was it seems to point out many differences so I assumed that I could not use that on straight Ubuntu.

I searched, maybe rather quickly for upgrade discussions from 3.8 to 4 but didn’t see any threads connected with that conversation. I’ll be more diligent in my searching.

XUbuntu is mainly Ubuntu with different desktop environment (XFCE if I remember correctly). This doesn’t change anything. Packages and way to install it is exactly the same between all Ubuntu flavors (Ubuntu, xUbuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Kubuntu or others). Even, if they could have many differences, it’s only packages available on install. And all packages for one flavor could be installed in another. It’s same base, way to install, add or remove packages.

Team,

The instructions for xUbuntu worked a treat and the upgrade went seamlessly.

Thanks very much.

Doggie.

xUbuntu (notice the small ‘x’, not capital like Xubuntu) probably refers to ‘any variation of Ubuntu, where x can be K, X, L or nothing’

The upgrade as suggested works well on other variations of Ubuntu - for example, I am running Linux Mint and it worked well.
