Upscaling in darktable

After reading this thread and since I recently have needed to upscale some images, how is the quality of upscaling during export in darktable? All I can find in the manual is this:

allow upscaling
Set to “yes” to perform an upscaling step if the user-defined maximum width and height exceed the original dimensions of the image. If set to “no” the exported image’s dimensions will not exceed the dimensions of the original image (after cropping).

Is it worth the extra work to do the upscaling in another app? The amount of upscaling I need to do is not that much, at most perhaps 30%.

I almost always crop, and then export

This image is from a Sony A6700 - in other words 26 megapixels APS-C

It’s cropped hard - what you see is a 1074x1074 of that raw-file, then exported at 6000x6000 (allow upscaling: yes, high-quality: yes)

detail at 100%:

you can see the full image here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OvdE_Ums3kPU6INsozbFV1sY2GxnSsbJ/view (good for context)

This is a massive upscaling, some 32 times or similar. And … I think it looks quite good. I personally would not hesitate to upscale 30% using these options

oh, I am answering a three year old post, did not realize that.

I had completely forgotten bout this post, but thank you. The upscaling seems to be very good. Good to know

And you also uploaded a large image, although full-HD is recommended, with crops for details as needed.

Right, I’ve fixed that now.
