Using moiré to measure resolution?

Quote: Moiré pattern occurs when a scene or an object that is being photographed contains repetitive details (such as lines, dots, etc) that exceed the sensor resolution.

Lately, I have become very skilled in obtaining moiré, irrespective of which lens I pick.
Could this “side-effect” be turned into something good, like being able to measure the
resolution of a certain lens?

Have fun!

I’ll stick my neck out and say No, because it’s about the sensor rather than the lens,so once the lens is sharp enough to enable the moire to happen, getting any sharper won’t make much difference to the patterns.

Also I don’t think it’s exceed, just “similar to” ?

Moiré can be used for measurement, but not in the way you are thinking via the camera sensor.

Handbook of Moire Measurement
C.A. Walker
Since its development in the late 1970s, the Moiré Fringe method has become a standard technique for the measurement of the behavior of materials and structures.

@RawConvert

And I stick my neck even further out and say, well… How, then, do you measure the resolution of a lens?

Thank you.

Quantifying resolution and debating over it is for the elites :stuck_out_tongue:. I just use what I have and learn to be satisfied :sunny:. In any case, you could probably look this up from the comfort of your favourite search engine. My thin and naive neck says that moire isn’t as simple as you make it out to be.

@Claes Maybe interesting:

@afre

Oh dear, I have not yet made up my mind if I am going to reply “Thank you!”
or “Que?”

Have fun!
