Can you post a sample so that people can see the problem?

Just a guess … ping light stripes are in areas where the image is overexposed/clipped?

yes

The clipping level for D700 images are known to be incorrect. You should use “opposed” with clip level set to 0.98 and your will be good.

What software?

isnt that something that we could solve in software for users out of the box?

i am new to nikon d700, how do i rectify this?

The first one has an exposure correction of +1 EV applied where -1 would have been a better idea. The second one has -1 EV and looks good in RawTherapee

… and no pink stripes in both. Please answer @kofa 's question

Here is the manual of highlight reconstruction in darktable.

https://docs.darktable.org/usermanual/4.8/en/module-reference/processing-modules/highlight-reconstruction/

And if you use ART, it will automatically apply highlight reconstruction to clipped area with default profile.

It’s not in the camera, but in darktable. Drag the slider or right-click the number 1.000 and and type a value such as 0.98 suggested by Hanno.

Wouldn’t it be better (theoretically, at least) to adjust the raw white point?
And could either of those corrections be done with an auto-applied preset (at least until dt is updated)?

Yes. We might include such setting in the new camera styles. It’s for sure something camera-specific.

I am actually not sure which is better but certainly would advise “users” to change the clipping threshold, it also pinpoints to “why do we have those magenta/purple parts”. Especially if you are thinking of using presets here. For “white point” presets we would likely need to define a number of them as the WP is often depending on ISO ( … electronic gain setting).
