Beginning in the 1970ā€™s, STEIM became known as a pioneering center for electronic music, where the specific context of electronic music was always strongly related to the physical and direct actions of a musician. In this tradition, STEIM supported artists in residence such as composers and performers, but also multimedia and video artists, helping them to develop setups which allowed for bespoke improvisation and performance with individually designed technology. In 2020 STEIM seized to exist due to lack of funding.

Listening to this podcast of music from China thatā€™s been released this year. About halfway through and thereā€™s jazz to indie, punk, and shoegaze. Emo and ambient and Kazakh lullabies. Trip hop. Though Iā€™m starting it again now as realised halfway through while on parkrun that Iā€™d been listening to voice podcasts at double speed and forgot to set back to normal for this. Thereā€™s probably less thrash punk than I thought. Eyeroll.

Cafe Oto is an interesting venue for non-mainstream music of all kinds in Dalston, London. Has been going since 2008, inspired by places for new music in Tokyo. Their website also has some audio files to listen to.
