Can someone point me in the direction of the play raw guide? I’m sure there used to be one.
Many thanks
I don’t know where you can find anything like that now, but this is something I’ve copied/created:
For each new play_raw thread you are expected to:
- Supply the RAW file. (Most people upload the files directly here. You are free to use an external storage service as long as people can get the files, and with really large files this method may be preferred.)
- Upload the matching sidecar file from your editor if you’ve made any edits yourself, and optionally upload a <1MB JPEG of your edit too. (An uploaded jpg-file that has been exported from darktable will default include its editing history stack, and can therefore be used as a sidecar file, see under load sidecar file in darktable user manual - history stack.
- Attach a license to enable people to post (=publish) their version of your image file. Most common license used is Creative Commons, CC-BY-SA, license like “This file is licensed Creative Commons, By-Attribution, Share-Alike”. (It is added automatically if you use the template when selecting a category).
The CC-BY-SA license allows others to use the image for most purposes, see Deed - Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International - Creative Commons. There are other types of licenses that may possibly better fit your situation.
A posting of an image file in the play _ raw category is normally perceived as an invitation to forum participants to edit in what way they find fit for their own image ideas (“use and abuse”) – including radical cropping and some wild use of colors and forms. A description of any problems you have encountered and any specific input from others that you may want, may increase your outcome from a thread.
Note – File sizes
While uploaded raw files cannot be changed and hence must have the original size, this does not apply to any uploaded jpg files in play_raw, thus the <1MB instruction above. Reduce jpg files at export to a maximum of 1920 pixels along the longest edge, (1920X1080) with 80-90 % jpeg quality, or smaller resolution. That is enough for viewing them on screen and will save storage space. (Jpg files in full resolution can anyhow be recreated by others from the raw and sidecar files.)

We have one now!
I thought we had one already made too…like a couple years ago. I couldnt find it though ![]()
Nice. @EspE1 May we pin that post ![]()
That is very nice!
I am using a lua-script to export raw+xmp+jpeg (appropriately sized) in one click so I don’t have to search for the correct files to create a playraw. It adds a button to lighttable/selection module. I find it very convenient.
playraw-export.zip (4.4 KB)

Thank you so much. There are a couple of members who regularly give their interpretation such as @Popanz and I really like what they do.
I will copy this and keep it in a safe place!
