Agreed, and @123sg’s imagery is nice as well.
I’ve often thought a site / blog would be interesting to do (maybe even fun at times) but I always run into the “what do I know well enough to even talk about” showstopper and it never happens. ![]()

It’s never stopped me. I’ve put together several different blogs and websites over the years (about lots of different things), and I’m certainly no expert on anything — in fact, the posts I wrote about my ‘learning’ experiences were by far the most popular.
Why not give it a go?
Being an Australian who grew up in Sydney, I feel the name Monaro does not cause any confusion to Australians.
I agree about the comment that the images themselves have potential to be used as hyperlinks.
Your webpage loaded very quickly on my not so great internet, which means your images must be well sized.
BTW, which company hosts your webpage. I have allowed my webpage to go into hibernation for a while since my host company folded.
@XavAL Thanks for the detailed feedback! Some points, e.g. the first one about the name on a single line, seem to be fixed into the theme I’m using… but I may be wrong.
In any case, I could change the theme but… not at the moment!
Padding - yes, I’m struggling a bit with that. I’ll try to sort it out.
I’ll consider all the other points too!
@martbetz Thanks. I appreciate that! I’m not 100% sure where I’ll go with the site, but tbh it was easier than I expected to get to this point.
Yes!
@Terry Thanks Terry! That was my feeling too, but it was funny that I hadn’t considered the possibility… ![]()
I’m using Siteground. Seemed reasonably priced and well known. I’m not recommending them
(I don’t have any experience to compare to anyway) but so far so good.
Thanks… I may try it after looking into it a bit more!
The beauty with Hugo is, I have a script that converts all images to webp, but leaves all jpg as they are. The site will serve webp only if the browser can handle them. It’s all on the fly.
I think Hugo is a little too ‘hands on’ (the code) for me…
I’ve made quite a few changes to my site since starting this thread, including a much better (I think) gallery plugin called SimpLy Gallery, so the images now load properly on mobile.
I somehow broke all the old galleries in the process… then the new ones didn’t work either! But after removing them all and uninstalling all unused plugins, then installing the new one and creating galleries it was fine. Dunno what I did exactly… just glad it’s working again, after spending all afternoon on it
Still not perfect, but coming along nicely. Shutting down for the moment!
i assume that Wordpress will do this - i.e. fallback to jpeg if webp isn’t supported (although that’s basically only IE 11 and below "webp" | Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc ) i meant if they don’t like the smearing you can get with webp vs jpg’s compression artefacts.
