Thank you. Very informative. Are there any issues with respect to mixing rgb tools and lab space tools? Would it be possible to have a lab based “auto matched tone curve”? Would it have any particular advantage or disadvantage?

Yes, the combined drawbacks of working in RGB and Lab (hue shifts, desaturation, etc). Not to say that you shouldn’t do it. I do it all the time.

Anything is possible.

Not in my opinion - the current curve methods are sufficient, and you can always simple copy-paste the auto-matched curve into the Lab tool.
