Large Dynamic Range (Sunrise)

I captured this (along with a couple of other exposures) to create an HDR image. Once I got everything into Darktable it was possible to get a decent output without going the HDR route and this is what I ended up with. Thought I would post for others to play with. I am particularly interested in DT versions but don’t mind seeing what other FOSS can do.

Tooks some liberties (healed the blow-out using Resynthesizer) and some additional enhancements. Left the green fringing (have to leave soon; actually, sort of liked the green for some reason as well; lol).

FWIW I don’t think there was anything blown out - I checked pretty carefully. The bright area is where the sun was about to rise. The green/blue tint in the rocks is the actual color - the area is called Blue Basin in Oregon.

I haven’t recognized any blown out areas.
But I fear I have cancelled any blue parts besides the sky. Maybe I have to come back on these parts with a second edit. :slightly_smiling_face:

I am confused about this photo. Where is the sun in relation to the mountain face? Is it behind the mountain, or in front of it? When I open the image, it appears that the mountain face we see is completely in the shade, i.e., the sun is behind the mountain. But everyones’ edits are depicting it as if the sun is shining onto the mountain face that we see.

Maybe I have it wrong.

Was struggling hard with the colours.
@Tim I think you are right. When opening the image the rocks are very dark against the sky

You have the colors of the rock pretty good in this (second) attempt.

Sorry about the confusion. The sun had not yet risen - it is behind the rock in the upper right of the photo and is about to make an appearance. You are correct that the mountain is completely in the shade.

Thank you. Then, I will present my edit.

This image was a challenge. I looked at xmp file of @Popanz and was inspired by his use of the color zones module to do some of the adjustments for chroma and lightness. I was unsure of the color of the rocks so I didn’t play with them to much.

Yeah; it became so in the way I processed; should have used another term.

GIMP. A fairly simple edit using luminosity masks. I have kept the mountains in shade, increasing the mid-range contrast. More saturation in the sky.
