Thanks, that is what I was trying for, you nailed it. I unfortunately couldn’t remove the bucket as there was a bull about 10 feet to the right, sharing the space!

Your picture is a wonderful example why I hope that at some point there will be the possibility to paint in a mask like a dodge and burn layer in gimp. Was fun working on it
My darktable skills are a little rusty, but here is a few simple edits to your photo. The only software used was darktable.
I’m a sucker for wood and old machinery in monochrome. No better way to highlight wood textures.
Here’s my rendition in rawproc. Just subtle tone manipulation with filmic, where the toe of the curve works well for these shadows, and a crop to put the ‘protagonist’ on a third line
