Blender AgX in darktable (proof of concept)

you’re are using a prototype - that doesn’t need to take care of backward compatibility. Once merged and released a module has to handle that on changes …

Don’t worry, I’m aware of the problem.

The point I wanted to make is: if a decision on priorities had to be made at this point, I would rather favor the release of a ‘mergeable’ version over fine tuning the UI.

I echo this sentiment and wait patiently for this module to appear in the master and then I will explore it. The feedback here is so positive.

Such great restraint…

Same here. Now I use the AgX only on those pics I keep for experimental purpose. I am hoping @kofa will finalize and bring it into the mainstream, as it is truly a wonderful module. Again a great work @kofa. This module will change the way we edit

Thank you. I’ll try to bring it to master, once 5.2 is out.

In my case, I import my RAF files into Darktable and for now I only need AgX for post-processing. It’s quite surprising, there are a plethora of other modules but AgX is enough.

Really great work, very very nice work @kofa thanks for all.

My own processing is usually very simplistic, and was so even before agx:

  • sharpening/denoising if needed;
  • for filmic: auto-tune the relative exposures, adjusting them if needed; maybe set a different norm for chroma preservation; adjust its highlight saturation mix if needed
  • local contrast almost always
  • tone EQ, if needed
  • with filmic, a slight boost with color balance rgb (standard or vibrant preset, maybe adjusted a bit) - not needed for sigmoid
  • lens correction (always)
  • and (raw) chromatic aberration, if needed.

I do almost all of that with agx, too, except for color balance rgb. But I like the ability to move the contrast pivot, and I’m generally happy about the module.

I haven’t really been involved with this, apart from a quotation from Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

I too, wonder whether it might be better to go for something that tackles the majority of common cases, and leave the edge cases to later. To quote from Voltaire this time, “Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien”.

If you look at my edits in the Play RAW category, you will recognize that often my renders are not that simplistic. I usually use many modules. With AgX I can reduce the amount significantly.

I’m happy with this module, you should be proud. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I know that you will answer, that you copied just here and there, but that doesn’t matter as long as you give credit. YOU have brought it together for dt, that’s what counts.

Since it won’t be out with 5.2, we are not in a hurry.
I don’t plan any more features. I’d like to try and make 2 and also 3 tabs available via a config option.

I owe @Suki the promised ‘skip primaries’ checkbox; I can add it to satisfy your curiosity, but I don’t think it will remain for the final version, as tweaking the primaries is essential to avoiding ‘the notorious 6’ (Blender AgX in darktable (proof of concept) - #1069 by kofa).

I think people can continue to play with the ‘skip the curve, do long only’ option during the weekend, but then if no one comes up with a use case to demonstrate it can lead to superior results using a hand-drawn curve, I’ll remove it. We’ll have a vote before the decision.
