How many watts is the PSU in your computer? Maybe it is not enough for both CPU and GPU?

850W fractal ion gold, supposedly pretty decent PSU and should handle both those things at once. Plus the 5950x is running in eco mode so it’s power limits are much more reduced than stock.
On a sustained CPU+GPU load there’s no crashes, where much more power is being drawn than what darktable can muster. There could be an issue with transient power spikes but I doubt that’s the issue at all. Motherboard arrives today, I’ll report later 
850W is plenty. If you are adventurous you could try to update BIOS version 
I am, I had already updated it I just finished the motherboard change and it seems like it was the issue 
It even boosts to 4.4GHz all core now and is overall cooler which is rather strange.
I guess some situations caused some power spikes and it couldn’t handle them at all. Weird that it would be darktable to set them off and not other more demanding programs.
There’s videos of people running 5950x’s on A320 boards and it works without crashes, so maybe my motherboard was a dud and it just didn’t exhibit the issues with the weaker 3700x.
I’ll update this thread if I was hopeful to soon on it being fixed.
