BW Negative conversion

It should then work with any master build. @EmerS , maybe try a nightly build from Github. (Make sure you keep its database separate from that used with your current version of darktable. The manual explains how to achieve that, and it has been explained many times on the forum, as well.)

Thanks a lot for all the great edits and suggestions! I can see a lot of interest in converting from negative.

I wonder if anyone of you know a software that is able to auto-crop and auto-rotate the negatives. This would speed up the process a lot.

Hello, your scanned negatives don’t have exif orientation info, so no way to auto-rotate individual frames I’m afraid.

Auto-crop is possible though using magick from a terminal. Something like this:

magick scans_strip_1.jpg -crop 0x2390 crop.jpg

This will produce a series of images named crop-0.jpg, crop-1.jpg, etc. You must adapt the 0x2390 part to your scan resolution and/or film format.

I tried this with 35mm negatives made with a Nikon F-501. The space between the images is always the same with this camera and the above crop command works quite nice.

On the other hand, my older half-frame Agfa Paramat (from about 1965) has unequal spacing between the photos (between 30 and 50px per image), so the crop command works less well. I still must do a manual crop afterwards.

But this is still faster than cropping each image “by hand”.

Edit. Your original NEF file must first be straightened in order for this to work!

I always enjoy a PlayRaw thread with a film negative. Thanks for sharing!

Consentrated on getting details out of the shadows. Had to do some selective dehazing so likely botched a few areas, but that’s the price of free. lol

Thanks for the play; now off to work.
