Canon EOS T7 - Good deal or Overrated? 2

This is a Canon thing. Apparently the R5 (i) is the first EOS camera to include this feature. Really. A feature that puny Panasonic travel zooms had since time immemorial finally arriving in Canon’s $5k camera range in 2020.

(Of course Magic Lantern has been providing it.)

Definitely. As well, there are also poorly implemented zebras. For me, as long as I am not distracted by the features, I will use them. Often, I am so busy fiddling with the camera that I miss the shot. I am clumsy with my hands you see.

Ok I will close this by saying that the T7 is a good deal after all, it’s my definitive feeling now without any turning back for some years. (hopefully, the device last many years)

Thanks.

That really depends on what kind of lenses you want to use it with. AFAIK, EF-S mount lenses are practically discontinued and Canon never really designed their best lenses for the crop version. Great lenses are available second-hand for EF (full frame), but you are then carrying bulk you do not really need and paying more too.

I am assuming that you got it with the 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 IS II kit lens, which is much nicer than previous iterations of the 18–55mm, but still pretty underwhelming. You may want to experiment with some EF mount primes if you can find them cheap second hand, eg the Canon 50mm f/1.8.

People who get a T7 usually can’t afford the L series prime lens or zooms. But there are decent lenses out there, on my 450D and now my 70D I use a Sigma 17-70mm Contemporary, better than the kit and still affordable. There is also a couple of 17-50mm f/2.8 from SIgma and Tamron that are much better than the kit lens and don’t break the bank.

Bah, I am satisfied with my results, I have enough gear right now to practice taking pictures and especially learning Darktable and Gimp.

My wish would be to stop the spending for a couple months, hopefully 6 months. Pushing what I have to the limits (if I can) and especially improving on darktable with the RAWs, these things are free!

I really want to be reasonable… I accumulated more then enough visual astronomy gear and not using it enough anymore, some of it paid for itself already, but not everything.

→ I already have knowledge about upgrading optical gear and GAS.
