Darktable - The color of the loaded images is flat, dark, and less saturated

@Rauff,

“NEF->RT 5.11” means that I opened the raw .nef file in RawTherapee … the rest is explained here:

For example, RL decovolution:

To get up to speed on the modern workflow, watch this tutorial:

It was done in the DT 3.6 days, so he uses an old version of Filmic and Sigmoid wasn’t around either, but that doesn’t change the fundamental concepts.

Here’s a quick Filmic-based edit, that largely follows the workflow in the video:

2024-12-09_Fuglsang_Sø_DSC_0175.NEF.xmp (8.5 KB)
Including downloading and importing the raw, it took me maybe 5 minutes.

Enabled denoise (profiled) and did some basic sharpening with the diffuse or sharpen AA filter preset. For white balance I used the auto picker in color calibration, lowering the chroma until I was happy with the look (for the most accurate results, it’s important to denoise first, by the way). For the colors I started with the basic colorfulness: standard preset in color balance rgb, adding some more saturation in the mid-tones. I finished in filmic by setting the white and black relative exposure to taste and adding a bit of contrast in the look tab.
