Darktable's Filmic RGB defaults render this desaturated

Of course. V6 behaves differently and presets will likely need to be tweaked. However, if you understand how the modules work you can easily adjust the parameters you need on the fly. We’re just talking about three things (at least I was): compression of the highlights, local contrast, and saturation vs chroma. It’s not always fun, but here is where RTFM works wonders. I know I’ve read the sections on filmic and color balance RGB more than a few times.

Again all great points. I suspect as more people gain access or when V 4 of DT comes with V6 of filmic that there will still be lots of people complaining about what has happened to the look because they don’t follow the development or read the manual…

Or they don’t give themselves time to work with the new version to learn what it does…

I know it took me a while to figure out how to use the reconstruction part effectively, and that was after reading the manual, and what @anon41087856 had posted on it.

At the same time, while users need to be encouraged to review the materials they shouldn’t feel discouraged from asking questions. Personally I try to research everything on this site and elsewhere and ask questions only after hitting a brick wall, but sometimes I overthink my question because I might get some unpleasant reception. And I’m not exactly a bashful guy.

I think the issue is when people immediately conclude the problem is some fault with the module, or worse, they start playing “stump the developer”.
