I just installed Ubuntu 26.04 on a family member’s new laptop; everything went smoothly, except for the installer not offering BTRFS out of the box; I used ext4, then btrfs-convert. (The machine is an Asus Vivobook S14, has really premium vibes, and was good value, I got the 32GB version)
Having tried a quick install of Kubuntu 26.04, and found issues with the 3D printing software I use not running well on Wayland, I’m increasingly certain I’m going to just simplify things and head back to Linux Mint.
And also unsubscribe from the various Linux Distro Talking Head “Review” channels on youtube, and unfollow / leave various Linux Groups on Faceache which are full of “Opinionated People” aka “Group Experts” who say “Your distro is rubbish, you must use this distro that I use instead”.
Life really is too short to be faffing around getting hopping mad distro hopeing.
Huh, thats the Distro Version of GAS eh?
Yes, it’s where you hope the next distro hop is the distro leap home (Like Sam Becket in Quantum Leap)
While I respect Linux Mint’s preference for stability and their slow approach to adapting Wayland, I think they will also switch at some point, so if you have software that does not work with the Wayland/X11 compatibility layer, your best bet is keeping that software installed in a lightweight virtualized environment. Eg Virtualbox Linux-in-Linux works just fine, provides desktop integration, etc. I run one such special piece of software in an Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.
I would hope that by the time Linux Mint adapts to Wayland, the software which I am using will be Wayland ready!
Christmas is when they expect to have the next LM with a stable wayland session.
