safe? Masking the area and changing the exposure, black levels, white levels and contrast? I think so.
Can you try a dark red filter with a circular polarizer? That gave me an almost black sky when I shot b/w film
Masking in PP can be quite time consuming. Filter in front of lens is faster
This said, with a Leica M (or any digital cam for that matter) I can set the viewer to monochrome and can actually get an idea how the image will look like. With film the viewer is blood red.
Of course, this will do a fine job.
Yes, masking in dt is also quite time consuming, and complex, too. I need to practice this. Still, for selective adjustments there is no other choice.
