Two notable misses: Digikam and GPhoto. But they may require a fourth category: āLibrary Managementā even if they include some editing capabilities (as well as Raw processing, at least for Digikam).
In the āOtherā section, Blender 3D might be worth mentioning for those looking at doing compositing with 3D Elements, or doing stuff like Match Moving with Photographic Elements.
I would like to suggest three,
-
Rapid Photo Downloader, does what it says, very easy to configure.
-
Geeqie viewer, a simple but effective viewer.
-
Fotoxx, an editor and organizer, which has much more features than on first inspection, ideal for someone starting out or as a stepping stone to the more complex softwares.
Thank you for all the suggestions so far, everyone! (Keep them coming if you have more!).
Just a small update - Iām working on the page layout right now for the software page, and working all of these into the list. Iāll update here once the page is live.
I was also poked on twitter about adding some F/OSS gallery/CMS websites to the list. Not quite sure how best to include them, but will consider a separate section perhaps? Something to list all of the various gallery/cms softwares that can be self-hosted or with hosted solutions available.
In the Pixel Editing category one could probably add the VIPS library (http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk), which is one of the fastest and less memory-demanding processing libraries in the FOSS market (and the core of my PhotoFlow editor).
VIPS is also used by Sharp, an high performance Node.js module to resize JPEG, PNG, WebP and TIFF images (GitHub - lovell/sharp: High performance Node.js image processing, the fastest module to resize JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and TIFF images. Uses the libvips library.). Maybe this could be interesting for this site as wellā¦
Does VIPS have an interface beyond being a processing library? I knew you used it for the core of PhotoFlow, but I wasnāt sure if there was any way for normal users to make use of it outside of being a libā¦
Yes, it provides a command line tool (called āvipsā) that allows to apply the filters provided with the library, or convert between image formats, or crop/resize images, and much moreā¦ a good starting point is here:
http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk/supported/current/doc/html/libvips/using-cli.html
The library has also python and ruby bindings, and a GUI interface called nip2.
Library management:
gThumb http://gthumb.sourceforge.net/
indispensable command line tool:
Jhead - GitHub - pld-linux/jhead: Extracts the EXIF data from image files
ImageJ is a great program for analyzing raw files http://imagej.nih.gov/ij/
DCamProf is a great DCP profile creator which can make smooth LUTs using even CC24 targets http://www.ludd.ltu.se/~torger/dcamprof.html
lapsestudio is a timelapse deflicker program which uses RawTherapee https://code.google.com/p/lapsestudio/
Just āsvn checkout http://lapsestudio.googlecode.com/svn/LapseStudio code-lapsestudioā, then cd into there and āxbuild LapseStudio.slnā
MacroFusion is an Enfuse GUI written in Python so possibly runs on all OSes https://launchpad.net/~dhor/+archive/myway
Thanks, great list (I still havenāt dug all the tools).
Itās not easy, for a starter, to choose which tool will be useful.
Open-source, free software is great but, there is a plethora of offer : difficult to evaluate what the tool is for, if it is relevant to me, etcā¦
Some ideas (in a mess):
- New entry : āCLI toolsā (imagemagick & co)
- Show the activity on the project
- pro & cons of each tool (can help when there are several tools for the same task)
- ???
Itās an important page of the site, because a lot of newcomers (to the site & to FLOSS photography) will start with it.
What do you think about that ?
I love this idea, and will prioritize a way to add a little bit about each project.
-
CLI tools - This is a good idea, but I fear that there are only really a couple of entries in the entire list that are purely CLI. Maybe it would be better to add a small icon indicating CLI/GUI?
-
Not sure about how to show activity on the project? As in, commits? Downloads? Not sureā¦
-
Pros/Cons of each tool (absolutely).
I am thinking that maybe I can sit down and write either an article or blog post that looks at the basic workflows and software that a user might consider for most tasks (like 80% of photographers might use RAW (darktable/RawTherapee) ā Pixel Editing (GIMP) ā output. Iād be willing to bet many would just stop at darktable or RT.
Or maybe an article about moving to Free Software from commercial software?
I will ruminate on this a bit for sure and see if we canāt get something a little better together (youāre spot on about the difficulties and newcomers being overwhelmed).
Thank you for poking me on this!
So Iāve taken a preliminary stab at some simple text that describes the most likely workflow for new users. Simply, RAW processing, then possibly pixel editing.
You can see what Iāve added on the software page.
Iām open to further suggestions! Iām thinking Iāll probably start writing one or two sentence descriptions on some of the projects to help people navigate what is what as well.
Good start! Hereās a suggestion: the centre-aligned lists look weird.
Opera 30, Mac OS X Yosemite.
Would be better if they were left-aligned in solid blocks.
What about Pinta? (Raster editor). Macrofusion? (Enfuse GUI). Thereās also nice image browser with RAW support - Nomacs. For mass convert we can use Converseen and Simple Image Resizer (both with RAW support). Picty is small and nice collection manager, so does Pivot. Photini is great for geotagging.
Thanks! Iām working on getting these added now (wish there was a better place to find Macrofusion than sourceforgeā¦).
Working on trying this out to hopefully push soon. Thanks!
Ok, just got a few minutes to fix up the CSS for the list. They should be left-aligned blocks on desktop browsers now:
Thanks @LightSweep!
I know this might be a bit of āscope creepā to the links page, but have you thought about putting a section in for video editing or AV / Slideshow editing software.
Most cameras have a video function and I really enjoy putting pictures to music too
Iāve used Kdenlive for video and Imagination to create some slideshows.
I donāt know if the extra section would be moving away from the ethos / raison dāĆŖtre of your site, but I would welcome a comprehensive list of video editors and AV slideshow software.
Many Thanks
Phil
I donāt think itās too far out of scope to consider video/slideshow type of projects (I mean, we do have Blender on the listā¦ ).
What are a few good projects we can include?
- Kdenlive
- Pitivi
- Blender again?
- [ShareX] (https://getsharex.com/) ?
What does everyone think about some of the entries on this list: List of video editing software - Wikipedia ?
Yikes! I just realized that I have a lot of catching up to do from everyoneās suggestions earlier. Iāll try to incorporate everything soon!
