G'MIC-8bf - A Photoshop-compatible filter interface for G'MIC-Qt

While having the possibility to share the G’MIC features with users of proprietary/non-free software is definitely a good thing (for these users), I’m not that sure this new kind of public will bring a lot to the project. If you read the comments of the above video carefully, you’ll see what I mean:
“No Mac version How useless!”, “That is what you can expect with free stuffs”, and other comments like this.
I think it will more likely bring new problem users (you know, those kind of people who call themselves “professionnal users”) than relevant contributors, but I hope I’m wrong.

I can check this evening this. Will comment in a few hours.

I’ve been faster than a few hours

I was able to open an existing document and apply a few G’MIC filters and save the result.
The first time I tried, I had the problem that after I closed the G’MIC window and tried to open it again to apply other filters Photo got blocked and I had to kill it.
The second time this was not a problem anymore, I was able to open the G’MIC plugin more times and apply different filters with no issues at all.

Hope it helps …

i am sorry if i’m in the wrong place or if it’s already asked

I’m trying G’MIC v2.9.6.2 in Affinity Photo 1.9 (downloaded from Affinity site), and all the filters that is suposed to, i believe, create new layers (ex “Channels to Layers” or “Split Details [Wavelats]”) when i press ok nothing append.

Am i doing something wrong ?

Good to know that the plug-in is now working with the Microsoft Store version of Affinity Photo.

That is fixed in version 2.9.6.3.
I accidentally broke the code that handles multiple G’MIC output images during refactoring in version 2.9.6.0.

Release version 2.9.6.3, https://github.com/0xC0000054/gmic-8bf/releases
Changes:

  • Fixed the handling of multiple G’MIC output images.
  • Show an error message if G’MIC does not produce any output images.

I´am certainly doing something wrong. Still dosen’t work neither on the PS or Affinity Photo

Are you referring to creating new layer(s) after running some G’MIC effects?

Photoshop does not allow its filter plug-ins to create new layers or resize the current document, the G’MIC effects that create multiple images or resize the image will be saved to an external file.

ok, i was expecting to see new layers. I’ve especified a folder in the Plugin Configuration, and now it saves as new files. Thank you very much :grinning:

A quick message to @PDN_GMIC.
We have found out why the G’MIC-Qt plug-in had a “Windows95” look on Windows. We had a missing folder styles/ in the plug-in installation folder.
It looks much more “integrated” to the system with this new folder, see screenshots below:

Before: (without styles/)

After: (with styles/)

(Note : I’m on Windows7).

The folder styles/ actually contains a single file qwindowsvistastyle.dll which seems to be responsible of the theme harmonization.
We have tried on W10 as well, and the plug-in theme seems to fit the W10 theme as well.

Maybe this is something you should consider for your next releases ?

Done.

Release version 2.9.7.0, Releases · 0xC0000054/gmic-8bf · GitHub.
Changes:

  • Changed the G’MIC-Qt input layer order to match the top to bottom order used by the GIMP plug-in.
  • Changed the behavior of the Active and above and Active and below input modes to match the GIMP plug-in.
  • Added support for the Smart Filters feature in Photoshop.
    • This allows the G’MIC effects that would be written to the canvas to be used in a non-destructive editing workflow.
    • Any G’MIC effect the produces multiple images or resizes the image will still be written to external file(s).
  • Added a Qt DLL that improves the appearance of the native Windows UI theme.

Also I added installation instructions for Photoshop, Affinity Photo and XnView to the gmic-8bf project wiki, and added links to that in the reame.

Thanks Nicholas, I haven’t noticed the layer order issue. Thanks for fixing that, it will make more filters working as expected

Hello, thanks for making this filter collection G’mic available and for all the hard work and effort that has made it so successful in so many programs, especially for me Photoshop

I use G’mic (now v- 2.9.7.0) in Photoshop 2021 CC where it opens and appears to work seamlessly, still attempting to explore all the many facets the plug-in filters have to offer

I also use G’mic (now v- 2.9.7.0) with CS6, where for some reason, the plug-in is really difficult to get to open and this is true for the several versions I have used, it very occasionally produces a message when opening is attempted

Photoshop.exe – Application Error

The instruction at 0x00007FF886BCEE6 referenced memory at0x0000000011392000. The memory could not be written.

Click ok to terminate the program. Ok

The referenced memory number changes in each message, as is expected

After a pause CS6 just closes and resumes its icon appearance

Obviously, I’m able to use Photoshop CC to continue to explore and use G’mic, but I wondered if anyone could offer any advice that would help in rectifying this opening problem in CS6, since I find it so very frustrating :confounded:

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, I do not have any idea why CS6 is triggering an Access Violation when running the plug-in.
It may be a bug in the plug-in or a bug in Photoshop CS6, I do not have a copy of Photoshop CS6 so I cannot do any further debugging of this issue.

Thank you for the quick response, for making G’mic so widely available and for coming up with solutions so often for those who have difficulties

The problem may just be with my system, but if it was more widespread then others may have found a solution, least that was my hope

I played with Photoshop CS6 “Preferences” > Performance

Graphic Processor Settings > Advanced

Reset the Drawing mode to Normal

CS6 then chose to work continuously for 6 or 8 individual uses of G’mic; however, on restarting Photoshop it reverted to the not opening the filter state

Hour or so inactivity then it opened immediately, now refusing to do so

As I have intimated, its not a show stopper as I can use Photoshop CC, but the intermittent availability within CS6 is frustrating

Best regards

I’ve made a copy of the installation instructions written by @PDN_GMIC, as a G’MIC reference page: G'MIC - GREYC's Magic for Image Computing: A Full-Featured Open-Source Framework for Image Processing - Installing the G'MIC-Qt Plug-in For 8bf Hosts
(gathered all the hosts in a single page).
I added a link to this page also from the download page (in the 8bf download section).

I updated https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wiki/0xC0000054/gmic-8bf/images/install/photoshop/installed-CC.png.
The install instructions are correct, but the image was showing the plug-in in the wrong folder.
It now shows the contents of the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-ins\CC folder.

@PDN_GMIC , I’m trying to speak about your G’MIC filter but I got this comment from the Youtuber Blue Lightning TV Photoshop (see the last comment, its answer to me) :

Is it because it’s a 8bf filter?

This has been already reported by someone else.
It seems that the G’MIC website is considered to contain malwares, by some anti-malware software. This is false (of course!), but I don’t know what we can do about it
(telling people not to use Windows is tempting but probably not a short-term solution  ).

One thing you could do to help is report this to VirusTotal, etc., and give them a link to the relevant files or better yet send them the samples to prove that they aren’t infected. Devs in the FLOSS community have to do it once in a while. David just doesn’t have the time for that.
