I’m not using flatpak but out of curiosity I looked for your issue and found this issue in github.
Based on this comment, it seems to work for nvidia by installing nvidia drivers via flatpak.
Maybe you can try it

What drivers are you using during this? proprietary? this is on mint?
what happens with darktable not on flatpak?
darktable-cltest?
Thanks for your input. The nvidia drivers are installed, and darktable/opencl on nvidia was fine until recently. I had run across that thread in my research, and no help to be found there. I’ve posted on Nvidia, will follow up with a bug report to them, and also to MX23 forum.
Hi g-man,
This occurs with the Nvidia 595 prop drivers, org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.nvidia-525-125-06 drivers, on an MX 23 plasma distro.
darktable non-flatpak is not an option, current versions not available in distro packages.
I’ll see about adding the results of darktable-cltest when I reinstall Nvidia drivers, hopefully when it’s working, and when it’s broken.
Can you build it from source? MX is a Debian-based distro, it seems, and Claes uses Debian, too. There are instructions for Debian in the guide (though I only tested the ones for Ubuntu, which is actually also a Debian derivative, but has different instructions listed): GitHub - darktable-org/darktable: darktable is an open source photography workflow application and raw developer
Hi Kofa-
I don’t know if I can build it. I’ve done it before, but on a different distro and ran into all kinds of dependencies that needed to be hunted down. Not the best use of my time I’m afraid.
I’ve been able to get it going again on flatpak with the Nvidia drivers, but I’m not sure how long it will last. Right now, after the first reboot after installing the opencl components (I took a screenshot of what was needed and filed it away), I have opencl and audio as well. I noticed that my clinfo returned 1 platform this time, rather than 2, so maybe something has changed.
Thanks for your suggestion. Claes may have moved on from Debian stuff, he hops around a bit. He was very helpful to me in the past.
If I lose opencl again in darktable, I might try the Ansel app image, see if it’s working out of curiosity.
But like I said, I’ve had dt Flatpak and opencl working fine for several months now on this system, which has been very stable in all other aspects. Something happened in the past two weeks, and the guys at MX have requested info to see if it’s anything on their end.
Best Regards,
ps: I’m attaching a screenshot of the packages I needed get the opencl component working on my system in the hopes it may help someone else. I followed the flatseal settings recommended elsewhere on this forum
You probably got an nvidia driver update, you need to update the flatpak driver to the same version.
No. Not yet.
Can I assist in some way?
Have fun!
Claes in Lund, Sweden
Hi Mica-
I did check and both matched.
After yesterdays install of Nvidia, I’m back up with opencl, and audio. I hopefully will continue to have some stability for the next month.
Thanks for checking in.
HI Claes-
Thanks for the offer, nothing to do yet. I’m trying to keep on the flatpak for the next month that I’ll be working from my desktop PC. I’ll build a new one next year and see whether I want to pursue a dt build or not.
Thanks!
Here are several terminal output files:

Again, the problem I'm having is that opencl comes and goes. Audio seems stable for now.
Any guesses?
Edit: It seems if I start an audio player right after a cold boot, I have no openCL in dt. If I shut down audio, restart dt, I have openCL again.
If I start dt right after a cold boot, I have openCl. If I then start audio, I still have openCL.
Also, I see that OpenSuse build service seems to have a current build of darktable available. If I install this, what can I do to get my configuration moved to the new install?
This MX23 system uses SystemV Init, not SystemD. Some sort of "shim" is involved in running programs that need SystemD.
Any chance this is at the root of the problem?
Why don’t you try this?
I’m sorry, I don’t understand, try what? The openSuse build?
The OBS link I posted above.
Thanks, I’ve got the link now.
Sorry for the wait. I’ve got the dt from OpenSuse build installed, and overwrote the newly created darktable config folder with the one from my flatpak. I have openCl active, and my files are current, as well as modules, preferences etc. I’ll continue working with this .deb package for a while and see how it goes. Hopefully, it will perform with stability. And also, when the next stable release of darktable is announced, the OSB will be able to provide me with a new package.
Thanks for your help!
I’ll report back after I’ve done some more work with this version.
