There’s no highlight reconstruction in filmic - filmic tries to smooth the transition between non-clipped and clipped highlights. It can’t intentionally reconstruct stuff from non existing information.
The highlight reconstruction module doesn’t smooth transitions; it just make use of the remaining information in non clipped channels.

To me, the name ‘highlight reconstruction’ in filmic is misleading, perhaps it should be called ‘highlight smoothing’. It is definitely useful sometimes for smoothing unpleasant looking highlight transitions where they have clipped, but it doesn’t seem to do any reconstruction.

I agree you are making it work for you. I have just noticed by experimentation that you get a considerably different output by blending filmic in lightness vs normal…still not a solution to highlight recovery but also perhaps providing a better starting point for corrections in the way that you are using in your workflow…
