I struggle to reproduce out of camera jpegs with Darktable

I wonder if you confused me with someone else? My only post in the thread is to suggest the original poster submit a play raw since they are asking questions for how to use darktable. I made no comments about quality, jpeg or raw.

I think this is a very valid point: if darktable is a capable tool (I believe it is), then the user should be able to take a raw in pretty much any reasonable direction. As an exercise, trying to match a style is a very relevant challenge (even if the user would normally want to develop the photo differently).

If it were an aim to only ever reach the camera’s look (that is, one preferred the camera’s processing), then it would be much less reasonable to work for something one normally gets automatically, via the JPG. Even then, one may want to correct certain aspects (white balance, overexposure etc) using more advanced methods than what the camera offers.
